prop shop
- a building or room stocked with props
prop
- any object used beneath or against something to hold it in place
- object or article used to support an experience for the audience
Many real objects are poorly adapted to the task of looking like themselves to an audience, due to their size, durability, or color under bright lights, so some props are specially designed to look more like the actual item than the real object would. In some cases, a prop is designed to behave differently than the real object.
Just as with theatrical property, the objects in "prop shop" have one appearance that shifts to another the closer you get to them and recognize common materials.
give props (slang)
- to express your respect for someone; short form of proper respect
There are references in the sculptures to other objects and artist's work, as well as an acknowledgment of the acuity of a viewer's perception. I think of my studio practice as having a porous nature where influences from all kinds of visual information are celebrated. Several of the sculptures give props to objects you'll recognize as familiar: a basket, rope, shelf, painting, suspenders... And a few of the artists' work I've been looking at and enjoying are Charles Ray, Amanda Ross-Ho, Matthew Offenbacher, Ry Rocklen, Gretchen Bennett, Sterling Ruby, Dianna Molzan, Alex Hubbard, and Ian Kiaer.
